Tasty tuna boats

Ready for a quick, healthy recipe that is packed full of flavor?!

This is one of my favorite ways to whip up a delicious lunch or pre-workout snack using just a few simple ingredients.

First off, why tuna? Canned tuna has always been a staple in my home. It’s inexpensive and filled with tons of great nutrients. The best of both worlds!! Tuna is a great source of protein and healthy fats which help give your skin, hair and nails a boost. Plus, if you’re looking to care for your heart-health, this marine creature is a great (ahem..) catch!

I will note here that not all tuna is the same. If all you’ve got (or all you can afford) in your home is a basic, store-brand tuna then work with it! Otherwise, I would highly suggest going for quality.

Getting high-quality tuna means that you’re not only feeding your body with the healthiest ingredients, but you’re supporting sustainability efforts. When fish are raised in “fish farms” there is a lot of waste that goes into the process, damaging the surrounding environment (think: release of pesticides and chemicals into the water).

Summary: try to buy wild-caught when you can!

Okay, now that I’ve covered why I love canned tuna so much, I want to bring back something that I feel like gets a bad rap… The classic tuna salad!!

Tuna salad makes people cringe sometimes because it’s associated with sad office lunches that stink up the break room or the 3rd day in a row your mom packed you a tuna salad sandwich for lunch.

I’m here to bring back the tuna salad, in the healthiest way!

What you’ll need are just a few simple ingredients…

1 can of (wild-caught) tuna, in water, drained

Spoonful of plain Greek yogurt

A squeeze of fresh lemon

A dash of salt and pepper

Mix it all up….

That’s it! You can always add in some diced red onion, pickles, and/or celery but when in a hurry this is my go to for whipping up a healthy staple to have on hand!

Mix all of your ingredients in a bowl (or air-tight container to save for later) and enjoy!

What do I recommend enjoying your tuna salad on?

For me, I love spreading it on lettuce leaves and topping it off with avocado, peppers, sriracha and sesame seeds. Hence, the creation of TASTY TUNA BOATS! It also goes great as a dip for your favorite tortilla chip or cracker or spread on a slice of avocado toast!
